Our Church Body

We are a medium-sized congregation, diverse in age, race and background.  We have children of all ages, teenagers and young adults; grown-ups and senior citizens; mothers, fathers and grandparents.  People join our church family because of our children's work, family atmosphere, biblical teaching and excellence in music.  We have close ties to Multnomah Bible College & Biblical Seminary and Western Seminary.  There are some members who have been here since the church was founded; others arrived last week.  We could be the church for you!

Our History

St. Matthew's Episcopal Church has been a light for Christ in the Parkrose neighborhood of Portland for more than half a century.  Our congregation was formed in 1944 and they soon built their first building on the corner of NE Skidmore Street and NE 102nd Avenue.  When that was out-grown, the present facilities near the corner of NE Prescott Street and NE 112th Avenue were constructed in 1957 and the first service was held on February 9, 1958.

Our Worship Style

Our worship services are an elegant blend of liturgy from the Book of Common Prayer, music from several centuries, and teaching from the Bible.  We use a variety of services from the prayer book, in both traditional and contemporary language.  Our music is performed by great musicians on the original pipe organ, our new baroque organ, harpsichord, piano and other fine instruments.  We make good use of our pew Bibles (New International Version) during scripture readings and sermons.  Everything we do is underpinned by God's word to us, the Bible.
